What Is a Stye?

stye (also spelled “sty,” medically called a hordeolum) is a red, painful bump on your eyelid. It looks a lot like a pimple, but it’s caused by a localized infection. There are two types:

  • External styes: those that form on the edge of the eyelid, often at the base of an eyelash follicle. Harvard Health
